I've used powerpoint throughout my entire schooling life. It is a software used for the creation of slide shows and presentations (1). For the visual learner it is a great elearning tool that can be used to engage students as a background visual for oral presentations. It can also be used as an entire learning experience when text and/or sound is incorporated into the slide show.
Given my interaction with the program in the past I am pretty confident in using it. I can use animation and timing elements to make the same slide seem interesting for longer and consider the use of powerpoints as critical to engaging an audience in oral presentations. For teachers, powerpoints are increasingly utilised now as more and more schools implement interactive whiteboards in the classroom. Given documented accounts of improved student engagement, I believe teachers should incorporate powerpoints into lessons where the topic may take a longer time to cover than usual to ensure students can maintain their attention with the topic for a longer period of time.

Powerpoint is very easy to use. I have extensive use of power point as well. Only I found negative experience is that there is no such as web base power point viewer. There are several company created that from power point file to video cript. But if you create animation within the presentation, it won't work on video. They will make each slide as JPEG image file so animation won't work at all!!
ReplyDeleteIf Microsoft can create web base power point viewer, that would be the another step of power point software.

Interesting blog Lyneale, I tend to think that power points are over used. People have a tendency o put too much information on them and I just can't stand it when you are listening to a lecturer and they turn around and start reading the dot points from the power point itself.

Great Post Lyneale, I agree with you Sharon it is overly used.I think because it is user friendly and student are able to use it even grade 3 is able to use it with guidance. It is basically used to enhance exploration or a steppig stone for further learning on other e tools. For us adult may see it diferently...Many lecturer just use it as a guide. If you see/use it often it can be boring.

Hi Lyneale
ReplyDeleteI think that it depends on the person who wrote or designed the powerpoint. Some powerpoints that I have seen are straight to the point and only give the learner the information that is requied, other, well do the complete opposite. When designing a powerpoint presentation I think it is important to remember who you are focusing on(the learner) and in a nutshell what you want them to learn. If you do this then powerpoints should be straight to the point and not over used too much.
Till next time
